GMC Motor Coach

The iconic mid 70's GMC motor home garners attention and admiration no matter where you are.  Over 12,000 were built from 1973 to 1978 and more than 8,000 of those are still accounted for just in the enthusiasts clubs in the US, Canada and to a lesser extent elsewhere in the world.  In Nova Scotia, CanadaWe restored a 1978 coach sold by GM as a bare shell to what today we would call a bus outfitter, Coachman Industries.  They called this model a Royale and did the interior in solid walnut.  A previous owner replaced all the soft parts of the interior (wall panels, headliner, seating, and even the roman shades on the windows) with natural leather.

We use our coach a lot as can be seen by the several pictures on this page of the coach in various parts of North America.  We put over 20,000 miles on our coach just last year alone.  When properly maintained they are very reliable, comfortable both driving and while camped and are a perfect size for the two of us.  The drive train is right out of an Oldsmobile Toronado so it is front wheel drive with a GM big block 455 cid gas engine.  That is what allows the coach to have such a low profile yet have plenty of head room for my 6' 1" frame to easily walk upright throughout the interior.

Around Pueblo, ColoradoOur floor plan is a one year only layout with a large kitchen and dinette in front just behind the driver and passenger seats, a separate bath, shower and closet amidship and a large U shaped rear lounge that makes into a larger than king size bed to the rear.  The large windowsOn the beach in new Brunswick, Canada provide lots of interior light and great views, which contribute to the spacious feel.  Yet, at just 26 feet long, 8 feet wide and 9 feet high it can fit into nearly any parking lot and go places most motor homes that are built on aDuring a mid-west storm truck chassis simply will not fit.

In this section we talk how to restore, maintain and enjoy one of these marvelous motor coaches.  You can download a number of .pdf files of presentations we have made at the various GMC club rallies.  There also is a link to a couple of hundred page difinitive history of the GMC motor coach written by Bill Bryant.  This history includes pictures of the coaches during design, different phases in the manufacturing process and lots of the marketing materials of the day.  The link takes you to a site where you can buy a cd of his work.  You will enjoy the read and it is well worth the modest fee.  Gary Bovee wrote what I think is a very complete guide to GMC related internet resources.  I highly recommend downloading that one and browsing to your heart's content.

If you like old stuff that was really well engineered, that can still be used and enjoyed on a daily basis today, and for which parts are readily available to keep them in tip top shape, then I think you will enjoy learning about the Looking toward the frontKitchen, dinette & cockpit areaGMC motorcoach.Rear lounge is a great place to hang out
