While this counter and the adjoining fireplace flanking bookcase unit appear to be built in, they are constructed as free-standing pieces of fine furniture.  The only difference is they sit on toe-kick bases that are attached to the floor so they can't move if bumped.  The top was originally to be granite to match the kitchen countertops but that proved to be too expensive so the customer elected to use a simple matching wooden top.
