Large bed in figured maple and bloodwood, in the studio awaiting delivery
There probably is no piece of furniture in your home that can be so flexibly designed as a bed. While simple in concept - just a head board, foot board, rails and slats - how the bed is constructed makes all the difference for generations of enjoyment. The bed pictured here in the studio just before going to the customer is a good example. The head and foot board legs and cross supports are made from thick pieces of solid Oregon big leaf maple which offers great strength, yet is beautiful and never looks bulky. Mortise and tenon joints are use to connect each piece together so they will never loosen or rack. While the bed is very large, the open slats reduce the visual weight. The dark burgandy color of the African bloodwood adds an aura of excitement. The critical bed rails are not only strong and interestingly sculptured, they also are held from bowing either in or out by slats that fit into carfully cut dovetails. The slats can never move or bunch up under whatever you use for a matress and/or box springs and no matter how much your little ones might jump up and down for joy as they warm their way into your bed. When they are grown and have kids of their own, perhaps you will be ready to pass this beautiful piece on to the next generation, and they to the following one. Call or email to start the dialog on a unique bed design to fit your fondest desires.

Bed slats dovetailed to side rails
Here is a detailed shot of the dovetailed bed slats. Take a look at how beds are conventionally constructed. The bed slats simply sit on a ledge on the rails where they can bunch up or slide leaving you with non-uniform support for your bed. They also can twist and even fall out if there is much motion on or in the bed. Worst of all, if the bed rails bow out there is a danger that you and your bed may find the floor at the most unexpected or inoportun time! If you want your bed to really last, insist on dovetails to hold the slats properly to the rails.

library built ins including murphy bed wall unit, fire place & beveled leaded glass front book case.jpg
Here is an example of a library that is also a guest suite. To the right of the corner fireplace is a large bookcase featuring beveled, leded glass doors to keep the books neat and clean. To the left of the fireplace is a pull down Murphy bed unit that houses a queen size bed. In this case, the leather couch is also a queen sized hide-a-bed. The library table in the foreground is complimented by a roll top desk out of view to the far left. The Murphy bed, custom fireplace surround and bookcase unit are all made from Oregon black oak (named for the color of its bark) and Australian silky oak (called "lacewood" in this country).

chest w-unique adj. shelf in walnut & maple 1.jpg
This interesting side table fits perfectly into bedrooms and guest suites. It features a unique, hidden shelf support using sliding dovetails. At the back and front are stacks of sliding dovetail segments that collectively are the height of the inside of the cabinet less the thickness of the shelf. By moving the segments up or down you can place the shelf where you want it, yet there is no visable shelf support hardware.

Here it is in the customer's guest room. The perfect place for your guests to store their belongings and where you can supply interesting reading material while they are with you. The easily adjustable shelf means you can configure the unit to fit the needs of each guest individually.

granite top chest walnut & rw burl 16.jpg
This chest has a granite top and features redwood burl panels to compliment the Oregon black walnut construction. It works well in nearly any room, but especially in a bedroom, library or guest suite where a spill is no big deal. No need for your guests to fret....

stand for sculpture "the swimmer" figured maple & bloodwood.jpg
Sometimes it is the frivolous that makes a room special. Here a whimisical sculpture needed a special stand to show it off. The sculpture is a metal kenitic piece that moves as a crank is turned. The stand needed to place it at a comfortable viewing angle and one that made it easy to turn the crank handle. Since it is a "swimmer" I used bloodwood configured like waves to draw the eye from the floor upward. The highly figured Oregon big leaf maple adds just the right amount of spice.

Blanket chest in figured maple and bloodwood with Port Orford cedar insert
Blanket or hope chests offer great storage space in your bedroom or in a guest room. They can sit at the foot of the bed or along a wall where you can sit on them as you dress. What is inside is just as important at the outside. I build blanket chests with a removable bottom that can be crafted in your choice of Port Orford cedar for a rich, psice like smell, or the more traditional red aromatic cedar, or from other solid woods that complete the piece without imparting a smell.

Small dresser in black oak & lacewood.jpg
Here is an example of what you can do when you want a dresser that does not look like a conventional dresser. This one is photographed in the studio just before going to the customer. You have a top drawer plus additional storage (drawers or shelves as you wish) behind the striking lacewood panel doors. Note he handy side bookcase. What you don't see is a hidden compartment that only you know about where you can store special items when you travel. Call or email for details on the many options for hidden compartment furniture designs.

Foot of bed chest in maple and maple burl, open lid.
Maple burl is the perfect compliment for highly figured Oregon big leaf maple. In this design the lid stays are made from bubinga and slide in a narrow compartment on each side so they never snag your cloths or bedding stored in the chest. The top is subtly curved so it is really comfortable to sit upon. Note also the inlay detail that follows the contour of the legs.
