Small bar in flame redwood burl, Brazilian cherry & maple
This stunning small bar shown here in the gallery just before going to the customer is a real knockout. Pictures don't do it justice as the combination of the flame redwood burl and Brazilian cherry are breathtaking! The legs are tiger stripped Oregon big leaf maple while the panels are so highly figured they look for all the world to be three dimensional. It is designed to have two stools on either side of the redwood burl where it flairs out from the top. Sliding doors on the back side provide lots of storage room and even feature wine glass racks for easy entertaining.

Small bar in flame redwood burl, Brazilian cherry & maple
Small touches abound. Here you can see that the panels and sliding doors forego the conventional rail, stile and panel look and instead feature unique hidden reinforced miter joints that look like fine picture frames surrounding the Oregon big leaf maple panels. While miter joints are normally too weak for use in fine furniture, the hidden reinforcements I used here make them very strong indeed. You can read about this technique on the "How to...." page.

Whether viewed from the front, sides, back or top, the eye is in for a treat. Here you are looking at the two sliding doors on the back of the unit. You really do have to touch those panels to convince yourself that they are flat. Stunning.

Entertainment armoire in highly figured maple.
This large entertainment armoire is designed to hold a big conventional TV, VCR and DVD player in the upper compartment (customer choice) with the audio equipment including a high-end turntable in the lower section. The turntable drawer is set on precision ball bearing slides so it can be closed with a record playing without causing the arm/stylus to skip. A passive air flow system is built into the lower compartments to allow for effective component cooling.

Entertainment armoire in highly figured maple.
This front view shows just how highly figured the Oregon big leaf maple can be. Of special note, the front doors on the upper section are double bookmatched. They are book matched both from the front and from the back sides by laminating two 10mm thick panels together front to back. When the doors are open it is quite a treat to see that beautiful bookmatch on both sides!

The customer wanted a bit of a retro-'50's look so I used these interesting SS legs and matching pulls. The unit is shown here in the gallery before they picked it up. In their home it is stunning.

Bench in solid maple with Br. cherry accents
This bench is made from a solid piece of figured Oregon big leaf maple. The ends are Brazilian cherry dovetailed to the bench top to allow differential expansion and contraction with normal seasonal changes in humidity. The legs were cut from this same piece of maple for a perfect grain match. The trestle is a 40mm (1.75") thick piece of Brazilian cherry projecting through mortises in each leg. The pegs holding the trestle are hand carved bloodwood. This is a stunning example of a custom piece for a particular placement in the client's home, creating a really nice focal point.

Detail of the grain from the top.
Using one large piece of maple for the top and legs allowed me to feature the live edge at several places and this really beautiful "popcorn-like" grain configuration on one end of the top.

Built-ins in black oak and silky oak.
While this counter and the adjoining fireplace flanking bookcase unit appear to be built in, they are constructed as free-standing pieces of fine furniture. The only difference is they sit on toe-kick bases that are attached to the floor so they can't move if bumped. The top was originally to be granite to match the kitchen countertops but that proved to be too expensive so the customer elected to use a simple matching wooden top.

Wall-hanging desk in black oak and silky oak
Here is a nice example of what can be done a small space. This wall-hanging desk is in constant use in the customer's home as a laptop location right in the center of things, just off the kitchen. The shelf below holds extra drives and other electronic goodies while the upper shelf is for phones and the sea of recharging devices that always seem to clutter. The top bin hinges at the bottom and drops forward to hold file folders for quick access. The style is evocative of the Arts and Crafts tradition but brought forward into a modern decorating style.

Winery sales counter in maple, redwood burl and bloodwood.
Shown in the studio before transport to the winery tasting room, this sales counter is a knock-out. The redwood burl and bloodwood evoke a sense of red wine. The cork top (not yet installed in this photo) looks good and deadens the sound of glass bottles and wine glasses banging on the sales counter. The end shelves provide display space for highlighting current wine specials. This design is also great for a home wine service/bar area, perhaps even inside your wine storage room. Call or email for details.

Very large AV bench under construction in the studio.
This very wide AV bench (shown here in the studio before transport to the customer's home) was designed to fit into an existing niche. To make it easy to move, it was designed in three pieces that fit together with floating tenons. The top was done in two pieces and also fit with floating tenons. In the customer's home the three bottom pieces were assembled together, secured with hidden pocket-hole screws, and then slid into the niche. The top was then assembled and also slid into place. Since the top is solid hardwood (Brazilian cherry in this case), it was held to the base via UHMW T-shaped wedges which hold the top down securely but allow it to expand and contract differentially from the base units. Once in place it looks like it was built in but can easily be moved if the owners ever elect to sell the house and want to keep this piece.

Coffee table converts to two forms, this one upright.
The customers really wanted two tables for this loft living room. On the one hand, they wanted a traditional style, square coffee table. When the grandkids are there they wanted it to be on wheels so it could easily move to another room when this room became the play room. The solution was to design a table that inverts. In this view it is styled to be a conventional square coffee table. Hidden under the removable top are casters that come into play when the table transforms into the down position shown in the next photo. The top registers on the bottoms of the traditional legs, the drawer inverts and the casters swing into position for ease of movement. Slick and functional!

Coffee table in walnut and maple, transformed and down.
Here is the same coffee table in the inverted position. Some think it is better looking this way, while others prefer the conventional square coffee table look.
-
Chess board in bloodwood, maple and walnut.
Game boards are very popular home additions. A really nice one, like this chess board, complements nearly any decor.
-
Here it is viewed from the top.
Note the bloodwood picture frame with a maple inlay that sets off the squares on the board itself.

Cribbage board in burl and walnut
A burl cribbage board is sure to draw comment from your guests. Especially when they see how the walnut edge is two pieces dovetailed into the side of the burl to form a compartment for storing the pegs.

Flat panel tv stand in br. cherry & walnut.
As flat panel TVs have become larger, they pose a unique styling challenge. You want a base that is attractive, strong, low and wide, and which has lots of room to hide away the satellite or cable decoder, the surround-sound components and lots of other stuff. This example is done in Brazilian cherry (looks a lot like teak) and black walnut. All of the components go together with a series of interlocking sliding dovetail joints so there is interest everywhere. When the flat-panel TV is in place, that big hunk of glass fades into the background while the eye is drawn to this attractive and functional base. I make these in a variety of styles and sizes that fit nearly any decorating style and room size.

Gong and stand set with lambswool mallet
Symphonic gong mounted in a furniture quality surround forms a most unique focal point for your home, lodge, or lobby - one that is also highly functional as the rich sounds of the gong provide healing vibrations for each person in range to hear and feel it. The Paiste gongs are hand hammered and tuned in Germany and are symphonic instruments of world renowed quality. My gong stand is designed to be a perfect complement allowing the vibrations to continue for over two minutes following the initial strike. The stands are designed to come apart for ease of transport yet provide great rigidity to transmit all the vibrations into the whole structure of its space. We keep one in our living quarters and not a day goes by that one of us doesn't play the gong simply because it feels good and makes us smile. You will too!

Hospitality sideboard in black walnut & maple burl.
Talk about versatility. The hospitality sideboards shown in the following pictures can fit in any room in your home. They feature solid burl panels all around so they are just as pretty from the back and inside as they are from the front. The sliding doors hide anything you want out of sight but close at hand. The finish is resistant to water and most household chemicals. No worry about a glass of ice cubes or a spill of wine, coffee or tea ruining the finish. Just wipe it up with a towel and go on serving your guests as though nothing happened. You can put it in the entry hall, the dining room, family room, up against a window or even use it as a room divider. Call or email for more info.

Note how the legs flair out side to side in this design where they flair end to end in the previous design. Same great functionality but a bit of a different look.

Redwood burl table with maple & br, cherry trestle base.
Now here is a real treat! The whole top of this table or desk is made from one solid piece of redwood burl with a live edge all the way around. It is a most unique piece of wood so I can't promise I can find another if you are interested. The base is done double trestle style with a modern flair. The top is allowed to expand and contract differentially from the base as it moves around from normal seasonal changes in humidity. Done this way it will never cup, curl or crack. This one will likely stay in my private collection, but who knows? If it looks perfect for your home or office, call or email.

Guitar speaker cabinet in maple and walnut.
Even a guitar speaker cabinet can become a decorative item in your home once you liberate it from that ugly black box that it usually comes in. This one is done in maple and walnut. It features dovetailed construction so there will never be a vibration no matter how strong the attack or how loud the amp. I make these in a variety of sizes and shapes to fit most powered and unpowered speaker systems.
